We all fall victim to negative thoughts. We let them in, we entertain them, we dwell on them, and we let them take over.
They may make us feel sad, anxious, or they may even put us in a rut for a little (or long) while. If our thoughts are creating our future, than creating a future based on a bunch of negativity is not ideal.
The key to living a happy life is finding a way to change your thoughts so that they are happy and lovely, so that your life can follow suit in a similar fashion.
Eckhart Tolle talks of thoughts as entities, entities that come in looking for power to give them life. They are only given any pull if you give them power to do so. Try the following exercise to immediately snap power away from negative thoughts.
First, become an active listener to the types of thoughts floating around looking for power in your head.
Second, get protective of yourself. Set up some big tough bouncers at the doors of your brain. This is an exclusive, happy club. Not just any thought can waltz through the doors and hang out.
Thirdly, wear an elastic band around your wrist. Whenever you notice any unfriendly thoughts looking for some entertainment, give the elastic a good snap against your wrist. Take away any power right away, before it has any chance to gain strength.
